2. Colour Depth
Compare the two colour images above. If both look the same, or the left hand image has a gritty look to it, the chances are you're using a lower colour resolution than this page was designed for.
A graphics card can operate in a number of colour resolutions ranging from 2 colours available all the way to literally millions. If the left pane looks gritty, you need to up the colour depth of your graphics card. The transitions between colours on the left pane should look smooth.
The right hand pane demonstrates what the pattern may look like if you were operating in 256 colour mode, though this may vary between graphics cards.
